A Deathbed Conversion

Jesus conversation with 2 criminals on the cross beg some interesting questions. Can a person be saved and ushered into heaven who only professes Christ on their deathbed? Is it even fair for those who follow Christ for many years? Ultimately, the question comes down to this: what are you basing your assurance of salvation on?
